All Fibers are not Textile Fibers

Raw Material:
The materials which are used/modified to produce desirable product (end product) through some processing operation is called raw material for those end product.

Textile Raw Material:
Fiber is the first material of textile raw material.Fiber is used at the first step of different kinds of textile products. After processing fiber the last product is yarn. All ordinary yarns, either man made or natural consist of a number of fiber or filaments. After processing yarn we get fabric and lastly finished fabric. From this fabric we can produce the end product garments.

Fiber:
Fibers are pliable hair like substance that are very small in diameter in relation to their length.A fiber is a unit of matter whose length is 1000 times longer than its width. For example:Cotton,Jute,Wool,Silk.

Textile Fiber:
The material which consist of fibrous structure and length is thousand times higher than its width and which can be spun into yarns suitable for weaving or knitting is classified as textile fibers.

To become a textile fiber, it must have some fundamental properties:

  • It should have fibrous structure and length should be thousand time higher than width.
  • It must have sufficient strength, elasticity and spinning power.
  • It should have fine structure and flexible.
  • It should have dyability.
  • It must be readily obtainable in adequate quantities which will not make  the end products too costly.
Staple fiber & Filament:
Staple fibers are mainly shorter in length (1-4 inches) and filament are continuous in length which can be used as such or cut into shorter staple fiber from.Staple fibers are generally related to natural fibers.Cotton and wool are the classical example for staple fibers.

Filaments are related to man made fibers. The single strand of the continuous filament is called monofilament. Silk is the only natural fiber which belongs to this group.Silk is the only natural filament.

Natural fiber length varies fiber to fiber, lot to lot,but man made fiber length is controlled by the manufacture, possible to cut the filament in any length he wishes.

"ALL FIBERS ARE NOT TEXTILE FIBER"
As per as defination , fibers are pliable hair like substance that are very small in diameter in relation to their length.Generally length of a fiber should be 500-100 times higher than its width.

But to become a textile fiber, fiber should have some desirable properties like sufficient strength, fineness, elasticity, flexibility, power to react with acid, alkalis and power to protect the effects of biological agents etc.

To withstand the spinning and weaving process, fiber should have sufficient strength and flexibility, in addition to having strength and flexibility, a textile fiber should be elastic. Elasticity allows the end product to give, when subjected to,stretching force.

The textile fiber should have power to protect itself from the effects of biological agents for its longevity.

As an example .we can say cotton ,jute, wool, silk etc are textile fibers because the have the above quantities  but the fibers of banana tree, bamboo tree are only fiber. As they do not posses quantities like elasticity, strength, flexibility etc.they are not textile  fiber. So, we can say "ALL FIBERS ARE NOT TEXTILE FIBER"
