The word 'Textile 'originates from the latin verb"Texere"to weave ,but as the textile Institute'sTerms and Defination Glossary explains,it is now general term applied to any manufacture from fibres,filaments or yarns characterized by flexibility,fineness and high ratio of length to thickness.

1755-The 1st sewing machine developed by Charles Fedrick from England.But stitch of that machine is like hand stitch.
1851 Commercially successful sewing m/c developed by Issac Merit Singer.It become popular all over the world very soon.
1829 the 1st garments factory was established at Paris with 80 sewing m/c to produce uniform for military forces.
1856 John Barren set up the garments factory in England.
History of Bangladesh
Desh Garments Ltd.,the first joint venture in Bangladesh Technical and marketing collaboration with S.Korean Daewoo Corporation,established in 1979.First 100% export oriented company.
1960 Reaz Garments was established asa a small tailoring outfit ,named Reaz store in Dhaka.1973 it changes it's name M/S Garments and export 10,000 pieces of men's shirt to Paris. It was the first direct exporter of garments from Bangladesh.
In 1991 the number of wokers in the ready made garment industry of Bangladesh was 582000,and grew up to 1,404,000 in 1998.
Present:
At present about six thousand garments factories are located in Bangladesh.Most of the garments are present in Dhaka city and near by Dhaka city(savar,gazipur,tangail) and positioned in chittagong city.More than 2.5 million of workers in employed in the garment industry and among them 90% are female.The RMG sectors now accounts for about 80% of the total foreign exchange.
Contributes 13% GPD,it is expected 15% by 2021.
